A group of excited children from Birmingham had an unforgettable weekend as they attended their first-ever live athletics event at the England Athletics National Outdoor Championships, held at the iconic Alexander Stadium.
The children and coaches were from Street Futures, a local community organisation based in Balsall Heath that recently introduced athletics to its young participants through an 8-week pilot programme funded by the Personal Best Foundation.
For many, this was their very first experience of live sport. After learning to run, jump and throw through the pilot, the children were now seeing the power and excitement of athletics come to life watching senior, under-23, and para-athletes compete at one of England’s national track and field events.
The day began with a special surprise: a meet-and-greet with Scott Lincoln, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in shot put, who won his medal at the same stadium in 2022. Lincoln posed for photos and signed their t-shirts, an unforgettable start to the day.
Their energy and enthusiasm lit up the stands, with event organisers and athletes praising the group as “the best cheering squad of the day.”
Usman Khan, founder of Street Futures, said:
''The kids really enjoyed today. They got to see some talented athletes take part, and demonstrate some of the activities they have been doing for the past 6-8 weeks. They were able to meet some future Olympians and Commonwealth Games winners, and also got lots of autographs and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.''
Amy Weaver-Tyler, Foundation Manager at the Personal Best Foundation, said:
"It was incredibly special to see the enjoyment and engagement of the children as they experienced live athletics for the very first time. Their excitement was infectious and their curiosity endless. We’re so proud to have made this happen through our partnership with Street Futures - this is what impact looks like, and we hope it’s just the beginning of their journey in athletics."
As the stadium roared with cheers, the day stood as a reminder that sport has the power not just to entertain but to open doors, spark confidence, and inspire futures.
